Cataract Surgery Overview
Cataracts are a common occurrence as we age. It is estimated that this condition affects almost half of people over age 80. Cataracts are deposits of protein and fats that accumulate on the lens of the eye. The good news is that cataract surgery can quickly and easily eliminate your cataracts and provide you with greatly improved vision.
Procedure
Cataract surgery is performed through a small incision. The eye surgeon uses an ultrasonic device to break up the cataract, which is then suctioned away. Typically, the surgeon will also place an intraocular lens that is similar to a traditional contact lens during the procedure. The surgery is very effective at restoring clear vision.
Safety
Cataract surgery is the most common type of surgery in the United States, with more than 3 million people undergoing the procedure each year. Cataract surgery is generally considered to be very safe, but as with any surgical procedure there can be risks. Because the surgery requires entry into the eye there are always risks of infection. Using specially provided medicated eye drops after surgery will help to reduce the incidence of infection or inflammation.
Recovery
Cataract surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgical procedure takes only about 10 minutes and you will be at the facility for less than two hours. Cataract surgery is completed on only one eye at a time. This gives the patient the ability to continue to perform routine activities while their eye heals. You will need to wear a protective eye shield while you sleep for about a week.
